Abstract:

Need: A comprehensive database and analysis of “reportable incidents” that occurred on the 325, 000 miles of natural gas transmission and gathering pipeline in the U.S. During the 13 year period from 1985 through the most current available data of 1997 is needed to assist pipeline operators in their pipeline integrity planning and management.

Benefit: During the 13-year period covered by this report, 1084 incidents were reported to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS). These incidents were each evaluated and classified into 22 distinct causes for the purposes of this analysis. The data and analysis yielded a number of statistically significant trends which all pipeline operators should be aware of.

Result: This analysis and data will improve the pipeline operators understanding of the causes of incidents, to monitor trends that may indicate the need for action, to identify potential risks and areas where risk management would be most productive, and to identify areas for potential improvements in the field data collection process.
